A woman's hair is seen as a symbol of beauty, and it is no lie that a woman with beautiful and full hair gets more looks and more attention from the opposite sex.
For years now, women have been using hair weaves to accentuate their natural hair; to make it longer, thicker and more full looking. A Hair Weave is a process where artificial hair is integrated into someones scalp giving them fuller, thicker, or longer hair. This service is offered by many salons and can range anywhere from $200 to $2000 - depending on the type of hair the client chooses and the type of weave they wish to acquire. There are many different types of hair weaves available to choose from.
The Sew-In method is where the hair is braided with a needle and a thread. The hair weft of hair is sewed onto the head from a braid. The Net Weave Sew-In Method is the same as the regular sew-in method except a net is sewn over the braids. The Net weave sew-in method is ideal for if you have thinner hair, because it adds more coverage and support to your natural hair for the weave.
The Hair Bonding Method, also known as the glue-in method is where your natural hair is sectioned and the weave is attached to the hair, near the scalp, with a glue. This option is less popular, as it is found to be damaging to the hair, and people sometimes have allergic reactions to the glue. If well maintained this method usually lasts about 2 months.
The Fusion Method is where the natural hair is sectioned, and strand-by-strand the weave is attached using wax. Fusions usually last 3-6 months and are the most expensive method. With fusions, the bonds are not visible unless you are looking for them. This is the most natural looking weave.
If you are new to the weaving process, the sewn-in method is the most recommended.
The first thing someone must decide when choosing to get a hair weave, is whether to get a partial weave or a full weave.
A partial weave is generally used to accentuate natural hair and is ideal for a woman who wants to add volume or length to her current style and has textured hair. During a partial weave, the hair stylist makes several small tight braids along your scalp. The hair stylist then uses a curved needle and either cotton, nylon, or silk thread to secure a line of hair integrations -which are stitched at the top- to the braid. This is also known as a hair weft.
A hair weft is defined as hair held together with fine threads. This can be done with a machine or by hand. Although machine wefts are more popular (and cheaper), hand wefts are more desirable because they are more natural looking and more durable.
This creates a "hair curtain" effect and is applied to each braided section around the scalp.
A full weave is a solution for someone who wants to completely change their hair texture or color and is ideal for women who have straight or baby-fine hair and would not be able to get a partial weave because they have no texture.
The process for obtaining a full weave is very time consuming and involves the same concept of braiding and attaching wefts, except it is done to the whole head. There are many different ways to get a weave. Many clients choose to get a hair weave because they want to add volume, length or texture to their natural hair. In some cases, they want a weave to entirely cover up their natural hair to obtain a whole new look. In this instance, the hair stylist will the need to blend the color of the artificial hair with that of the clients natural hair - this type of weave is generally referred to in today's society as "hair extensions" or a partial weave. This type of hair weave generally takes about 3 to 4 hours.
The idea behind hair weaves is to allow someone to change their hair without it looking unrealistic. Before you get a hair weave, it is important to consider what type of hair will best accentuate your natural hair. Also, when deciding on a type of hair to purchase, you must consider your lifestyle and the amount of time you have to style your hair, it is very important to know the difference between each type of hair, and what each type can do for you.
The main types of hair available for purchase are 100% Human Hair, Virgin Hair, Remy Hair (also known as Remi Hair), Virgin Remy Hair, Yaki Hair, Silky Yaki Hair, and Kinky Yaki Hair.
100% Human Hair is the most ideal, and the most recommended choice of hair. 100% Human hair, with no synthetic fibers, can be curled, flat-ironed, washed and conditioned.
Virgin Hair is cut with the cuticle going in the same direction which allows the hair to not easily tangle. This also means that the hair is in its natural state. No chemicals have been added to it whatsoever. This type of hair can come from any race and is usually more expensive because of the time it takes to grow and because it is found in lesser abundance.
Remy Hair, also known as Remi, Virgin Remy, or cuticle hair is unprocessed and not chemically treated. Remy hair is more costly in price, but it is reusable. The word "remi" is used to describe high-quality human hair used for extensions. In remi hair weaves, all of the cuticles of the hair face in the same direction, however there is some chemical processing involved.
The next on the list is Yaki hair. There are 4 types of Yaki hair textures.
Silky Yaki, which is the lightest or silkiest texture, -also known as Yaki Straight- is very close to silky straight hair.
Regular yaki is the most popular kind, also known as relaxed yaki. This yaki is made to look like African American hair that has been relaxed and it is not as silky as silky yaki.
Kinky yaki is very thick and natural looking.
The next type of yaki is the most coarse of all, this type of yaki is called Coarse Yaki.
Coarse Yaki looks like natural African American hair that has not been blow dried or put through any chemical processing.
Synthetic blend hair is a mix of human and synthetic fibers. Some brands of synthetic blend hair can have heat applied only up to a certain temperature.
Pure Synthetic hair is available to be used for weaves and is made from different chemicals/plastics depending on the manufacturer. Most synthetic hair can not be curled or flat ironed. Synthetic hair is cheaper, less quality hair that cannot be re-used, washed or cut & curled. It is recommended to choose the synthetic hair with the curl pattern that you desire.
There are many benefits for clients to obtaining a hair weave. They are low maintenance, they can protect your natural hair, there is no commitment involved and there is plenty of room for experimentation. If you don't have a lot of time to style your hair everyday, a weave is great because it is a way to have a low maintenance hair style without having to cut your hair to a short length. Hair Weaves also offer a great variety of different hair styles and types to add texture without having to tease your hair for hours in the morning.
Hair weaves are a great way to protect your natural hair from everyday wear and tear, and depending on how well you maintain your hair weave, it can look just as fabulous as it did the day you got it.
There is no commitment involved in obtaining a hair weave. You can change it up and experiment with it as much as you want. You can try new styles and colors you haven't had the courage to try, and if you do not like it you can simply remove the hair weave and your natural hair is not affected whatsoever.
Once you have made all of your decisions and your weave has been applied, it is important to remember to take care of it as if it were your natural hair. Weaves must be washed and deep conditioned regularly because they do not get the nourishment from the natural oils produced by your scalp.
When washing and shampooing, it is important to remember to dry your braids completely to avoid scalp irritation.
Most weaves last up to a year, however it is important to note that you will have to return to the salon to have the stylist tighten the braids and re-attach the hair wefts as your natural hair grows longer.
